Jeannette S. Bowden graduated from Northern State Teacher's College (now Northern Michigan University) in Marquette, Michigan in 1936. She worked as a student assistant in the office of the President and continued as a permanent staff member after graduation. In 1974, Bowden was made executive assistant to the President and continued in this position until her retirement in 1980. She died in Marquette at the age of 92 in 2002. Dr. Edgar L. Harden became President of Northern Michigan College in 1956. Previously, he had served as Dean of Continuing Education at Michigan State University. Harden is generally credited with saving Northern from closure. In 1956 the student population was roughly 800 but nearly reached 8,000 in 1967.
